Book Review: The Anatomy of Forgiveness, B. Jane Humphrey

8/11/2014

Jin Li Frick
In the Anatomy of Forgiveness, Humphrey shares the concept of Kinetic Forgiveness through cultivation of peace that cannot simply be realized through an aversion to conflict. She also discusses how lucid meditation can help with forgiveness.  While the book initially held promise, it quickly turned disappointing.  Humphrey did not take the opportunity to dive into key concepts beyond stating the hypotheses and demonstrating how to put into action.  There was so much more missing in terms of generating a deeper understanding of the concepts and how the conclusions were arrived at. It would also have been powerful to see how these practices have impacted others beyond herself.  Additionally, I was a bit confused that the final third of the book was simply a reprint of her old blogs.

Having said that I appreciated her honesty and willingness to share her life's experiences and her journey to the present moment. She has been able to overcome multiple challenges in her life with grace, and that is a true testament to her self-awareness and ability to forgive at a deeper level, not only others but herself.
