I was struck yesterday by how someone was interpreting my use of the word "power" for myself and for in women in general. I have written about not giving your power away, and this individual approached the definition of a powerful woman in what I perceived to be a negative manner. He seemed to believe that a powerful woman was strong-willed, defiant, unforgiving, and relentless to the point of being dogmatic. She does not consider those around her, but rather puts her own needs first and protects her herself at all cost, including at the expense of others. As I seek to understand why he feels this way, I realize that he is choosing this interpretation due to his learned beliefs, assumptions and fears.
The following is my definition of a powerful woman and would like to know what readers think:
A powerful woman is one who lives her life in ways that she finds fulfilling. She seeks self actualization and nurtures herself. She shows compassion for others, is kind and caring, but also cares for herself. She does not make herself uncomfortable to increase the comfort of others around her. She doesn't compromise her values, is self aware and is an avid student of life. She is also non-reactive. She allows herself to make mistakes. She is forgiving of herself and of others. She lives her life purposefully, and she seeks clarity and understanding each step of the way.
She has the ability to face whatever life throws at her, trusting in the Universe and the lessons it has to teach. She is empowered by her faith and is strong in the face of adversity. She is not afraid to be vulnerable or to show compassion.
She is not afraid to admit when she is wrong. She doesn't hold herself above others, but demonstrates a strong curiosity and actively seeks answers, allowing herself to grow through knowledge and positive influence.
